The Society for Buddhist Christian Studies invites and encourages blog submissions from our members.

For the last seven years I have been developing a new research competency around child sexual abuse and traumatic wounding, specifically as these have played out in recent decades in the Catholic church’s global abuse crisis. My efforts and the efforts of those with whom I have collaborated focus less upon mere description of the crisis in favor of what now seems to be the church’s unfinished business of developing, theologically, a victims-first approach to the crisis, centered on healing. A victims-first approach would commit the entire church – the people of God – to the causes of prevention, protection, healing, and hope.

During my doctoral studies, I encountered the figure of Tsong kha pa, and explored his understanding of Buddhahood in conversation with the Christian notion of incarnation, drawing in particular on the figure of Maximos the Confessor. After encountering the figure of Desideri and attending an international conference on his legacy held in 2018 in his native town of Pistoia, I went back to the Great Treatise and decided to try and write a commentary to this text from a Christian perspective for the series of Christian commentaries on non-Christian texts edited by Catherine Cornille.
